STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Shake Shack has sweetened the congestion pricing pot with a meal deal — toll not included. This week through Friday, Jan. 17, all Shake Shacks in New York City, New Jersey, and Connecticut are offering a $9 “Congestion Pricing Combo” — a ShackBurger and fries. As the company noted, “Whether you’re braving the new tolls or taking trains to dodge them, Shake Shack is making it easier for New Yorkers to adjust to this change without losing their appetite.” To redeem, guests can order in-Shack, online , or via the Shack App with code NYTOLLS. There are two Shake Shacks on Staten Island: at the Empire Outlets — 35 Richmond Terrace — and the Staten Island Mall — 2655 Richmond Ave., New Springville. Shake Shack started 24 years ago as a seasonal hot dog cart by restaurateur Danny Meyers in Manhattan’s Madison Square Park. Those signature hot dogs remain on the menu today. As the brand exploded in popularity, Meyers opened a kiosk, expanding the menu to include burgers, crinkle cut fries, and milkshakes. In 2005, as the gourmet burger trend boomed, Shake Shack’s park operation drew lines around the park. Formally recognized by publications such as New York magazine, food critics wrote, “The Shake Shack burger... is smallish, modestly appointed, and unassuming. A thing of simple beauty swaddled in a wax-paper jacket, it’s a bit of a throwback, more West Coast casual (think In-N-Out or Taylor’s Refresher) than East Coast showy.”
