SALT LAKE CITY (
ABC4 ) — If you, like many, are struggling to come up with unique and personal gift ideas this holiday season, turning to gifts that are locally sourced and inspired may be the answer. While shopping on Amazon has its perks, it can be hard to find products with a personal connection. From prickly pear jelly to salt ornaments, these local gifts may be just what you are looking for.
Gifts that scream Utah
If subtle is what you have in mind, keep scrolling down. This section is for gifts that scream Utah — perfect for out-of-state loved ones or even a particularly Utah-loving, in-state relative.
Honey products
What is more representative of the Beehive State than honey? Local honey can be found in dozens of locations across the state, but one store in Logan offers honey packages perfect for gifts.
Cox Honeyland of Utah sells an array of honey-themed products both in-store and online, including raw and creamed honey, honey caramels, and honeycomb trays. The store also sells gift baskets ranging from $30 to $60. The baskets include products that go well with honey, such as breakfast foods and muffins. If you want to buy something honey-related but a little more unique, check out northern Utah’s
Slide Ridge — creators of Honey Wine Vinegar.
Utah’s sweet treats
For chocolate lovers, you can’t go wrong with the iconic
Utah truffles found at most gift shops in the state. For those who prefer candies, Utah is also known for its
salt water taffies . Other popular Utah treats include
Aggie ice cream and the
BYU Store’s chocolate cinnamon bears .
Iconic Utah Gifts
On a Utah gift
Reddit thread , Redditors mentioned several Utah-inspired gifts that introduce some humor to the holiday season. Their suggestions included fry sauce, jello and “SL,UT” T-shirts. Other suggestions included salt from
Redmond Trading Co. , soda shop gift cards,
Lehi Roller Mills mixes,
Beehive Cheese , and ornaments made of salt from the Great Salt Lake.
Locally-sourced gift baskets
If you are looking for locally sourced gift baskets, Utah stores have you covered. While this list could not include all gift basket options, here are a few that stand out.
Food baskets
From specific foods — such as
bread ,
cheese , or
honey baskets — to baskets full of an array of food items, there are plenty of options to choose from.
Caputo’s Market & Deli — located in downtown Salt Lake City — offers gift boxes with “curated goods from [its] market shelves,” according to its website. The boxes range from $70 to $250 and include Italian food options, such as cheese, meat, chocolate, extra virgin olive oil, balsamic vinegar, and pasta. They also offer a customizable gift box option. Utah-based company
Gift Hounds offers a more general (and less expensive) selection of products in its gift baskets. While not all the website’s products are locally sourced, the company offers several
“Made-in-UTAH” baskets with some of Utahns’ favorite snacks.
Other baskets
When it comes to Utah-based gift baskets,
Everything Utah has one of the largest selections. The store offers everything from “Pamper Her” and “Gift for Him” to “Puzzle Night” and “Dino Time” baskets. The baskets range from $50 to $190.
Local shops to check out
If the options above are not what you are looking for, here are a few businesses to browse for the perfect local gift.
Artisan markets
Several businesses in the Salt Lake area offer artisan, handmade and locally-produced products, perfect for unique and personal gifts.
Hive Market and
Salt & Honey are both popular spots dedicated to handmade and local products. While Salt & Honey has online shopping and several stores across the valley, Hive Market exclusively sells products from more than 60 local artisans at its location in Historic Trolley Square.
The Quilted Bear — while not exclusively artisan — is a good option for those in northern Utah, as they have a storefront in Ogden. The home decor and gift store sells products from around the world but specializes in local handcrafted goods, which are sold in booths within the store.
Locally-crafted souvenirs
Uniquely Utah Souvenir Co. is a downtown souvenir shop dedicated to featuring local products, including “authentic Navajo pottery” and “hand-poured beeswax candles,” according to its website. The store also sells more typical souvenir items such as shot glasses, salt ornaments, and T-shirts.
“Nature-based mercantile”
The Kinlands is “a nature-based mercantile” situated in Riverton on a plot of land used as a pumpkin patch or pine winter wonderland during the holidays, according to its website. The Kinlands Shoppe sells seasonal food, home, apothecary, and floral goods. While not all the products are locally sourced, Co-owner Jen Winter told ABC4 they carry several products from Utah artisans, including caramel apples, and sourdough bread. She said employees can direct shoppers to locally sourced products upon request.
Gifts for art lovers
For art lovers, two places stand out in Salt Lake City: The Art Shop at the
Utah Museum of Contemporary and the
Urban Arts Gallery . Both locations sell eclectic products in addition to local art and are free to enter (UMCA has a “pay-what-you-can policy”).
Spirits
If you are looking for a more spirited gift,
New World Distillery in Weber County sells handcrafted spirits made with locally sourced ingredients where possible and in bottles designed by a local artist. The distillery also advertises that it sells “Utah’s only locally made agave spirits” made with agave from Eden.
Southern Utah-inspired
Outside of the Salt Lake Valley, stores dedicated to local products are harder to find, but that doesn’t mean they don’t exist. St. George’s
Mojave is the epitome of a southern Utah-inspired store. The business is not only committed to local artisans but to the desert itself. From prickly pear jelly to cactus grow kits, the store sells products that uniquely represent the region. In southeastern Utah, the
Moab T-Shirt Shop’s souvenirs are entirely designed by local artists and screen printed in the store. They boast of having the “largest selection of stickers anywhere,” but keep in mind it’s one of the stores you really have to visit in person.
