As part of a one-of-a-kind partnership with the Smithsonian Institution, six students from Colorado State University-Pueblo will get the chance of a lifetime when they intern at the famous Washington, D.C., museum complex in June.

From May 31 through July 1, the six students will work at several Smithsonian facilities, including the Office of Protection Services, Digital Archives Management, Freer-Sackler Gallery of Art, Traveling Exhibition Services, and the National Museum of African American History and Culture. "This gives (the students) the opportunity to see that they are competitive at a national level. This is forcing the Smithsonian to see that we have exceptional students at CSU-Pueblo," Fawn Amber Montoya, an associate professor at CSU-Pueblo, told The Pueblo Chieftain"This is the only relationship the Smithsonian has west of the Mississippi (River)."
Each intern will receive a small stipend for expenses, as well as housing that will be paid for by CSU-Pueblo. In addition, the students may receive up to three hours of internship credit and may be paid for select positions. This year's class of interns includes Keragan Ettleman, Jelsea Ford, Teagan Boda, Genesis Enriquez, Matthew Hawkins, and Frankie Jaramillo. Read more about each of them here.
They have all done good things for our community, and I am excited for them in the future," Montoya said. "I think they we will see great things from them later on."
The university's partnership with the Smithsonian began in May 2016, as part of their involvement with the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities. Five students from CSU-Pueblo interned at the Smithsonian last summer. Founded in 1846, the Smithsonian Institute's 19 museum and galleries, zoo, and nine research facilities make it the largest museum and research complex in the world. Its focus on education -- whether it be informal education opportunities or professional development -- is well known. For more information on the many competitive, prestigious internship programs the Institute offers, read more on their website.

The Zoology Foundation is a great opportunity for today’s youth to learn about the importance of rescue and respect for animals!
