A small earthquake rattled parts of west-central Virginia Tuesday afternoon.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a 2.8-magntitude earthquake was recorded around Dillwyn and Farmville around 1:08 p.m.

USGS said it received several reports from people who felt shaking across west-central Virginia.

Marylanders last felt an earthquake in April . That one, a 4.8 magnitude earthquake, was centered near Whitehouse Station, New Jersey, which is about 45 miles west of New York City.

Maryland also felt an earthquake in January when a 2.3 magnitude quake struck around 1 a.m. on Jan. 23 about 2 miles west of Rockville with a preliminary depth of about 9.5 miles.

In February 2023 , a 2.6 magnitude earthquake struck off the Atlantic coast at the Maryland/Virginia border about 18 miles east of the shoreline with a depth of 11.2 km.

In October 2022 , a 2.0 magnitude earthquake hit about 3 miles east-southeast of Sykesville just before midnight, and it was felt as far north as the Pennsylvania line and as far south as Virginia and West Virginia.

In June 2021 , a 2.6 magnitude earthquake rattled Maryland, centered just southeast of Woodlawn. Just days later , a 7 magnitude earthquake was felt in southwest Baltimore. In August 2021 , a 2.1 magnitude earthquake shook parts of Howard County, where the epicenter was located in Clarksville.

In August 2015 , a 2.2 magnitude earthquake was reported near Crownsville.

In August 2011 , a 5.8 magnitude earthquake centered in Virginia was felt in the greater Baltimore area that caused more than $3 million worth of damage to the Baltimore Basilica in the form of more than 50 different cracks. There were similar stories all over the greater Baltimore area after bricks fell, cracks formed in foundations and objects fell off shelves.
