Yes, some areas in Florida could see "significant" snowfall starting today after the rare combination of freezing temperatures and moisture come together.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis issued a state of emergency Sunday ahead of what some forecasters have said has the potential to be one of the worst storms in Gulf Coast history.

Schools in 14 counties announced they would be closed Tuesday and more than 20 have already said they'll be closed Wednesday.

The worst conditions are expected to arrive Tuesday night into Wednesday, and snow is expected to fall in Pensacola later this morning.

Power outages are possible if ice accumulates on power lines or trees impacted by ice fall on the lines.

The bitterly cold temperatures are not expected to get into South Florida, according to the Florida Public Radio Emergency Network, although the front is forecast to bring showers to both Central and South Florida.

Will it snow in Florida today?



Pensacola is under both an extreme cold warning and winter storm warning until Wednesday morning.

The National Weather Service Mobile warned residents there's a chance for sleet before 9 a.m. CT and then snow is expected to fall.

Tallahassee is under several advisories : extreme cold warning, cold weather advisory and winter storm warning.

There is a slight chance for rain and snow showers before 4 p.m. Tuesday. Snow showers, possibly mixed with sleet, are likely after 5 p.m., according to the National Weather Service Tallahassee.

Jacksonville also is under several advisories: cold weather advisory, winter storm warning and freeze warning.

Rain, snow, freezing rain and sleet are likely Tuesday night, according to the National Weather Service Jacksonville.

Gainesville also is under several advisories: cold weather advisory, winter storm warning and freeze warning.

No snow is in the forecast for the area, but watch for freezing rain, possibly mixed with sleet Tuesday night, according to the National Weather Service Jacksonville.

Where will it snow in Florida?



There is a chance for snow across the Panhandle over the next 24 hours.

What about Central and South Florida? How cold will it get?



Central and South Florida can expect showers and high temperatures between the upper 50s and low 60s Wednesday. Prepare for gusty winds that will make the temperatures feel colder, according to the Florida Public Radio Emergency Network.

The coldest air will stay bottled up across the northern half of Florida and slowly arrive in South Florida on Thursday when the highs are expected to remain in the 60s.

Expect the sunshine to return for the weekend, but the coldest day for South Florida will be Friday, with highs in the low 60s, and lows in the upper 40s to low 50s. Winds will make it feel even cooler.

Winter weather school closings in Florida



Bitterly cold temperatures expected to bring snow, ice and sleet to some Florida locations has prompted several counties to announce schools will be closed.

Fourteen counties across North Florida are closed Tuesday.

As of Tuesday morning, 23 counties have announced schools will be closed Wednesday.

DeSantis declares state of emergency ahead of winter storm



DeSantis issued a state of emergency Sunday saying "all modes of hazardous winter weather will be likely, including snow, sleet, and freezing rain."

DeSantis authorized the adjutant general to activate the Florida National Guard and Florida State Guard, as needed, to respond to the emergency.
