WHEELING, W.Va. (WTRF) – After Winter 2023/2024 was a dud, with only 1 inch of recorded snowfall in downtown Wheeling, West Virginia, will we make up for it this year?

Over the past 17 years of recorded snowfall in downtown Wheeling, W.V. we averaged 32.2 inches of snowfall over the winter months.

The biggest snowfall observed was the winter of 2009/2010 just before the Saints vs. Colts Super Bowl game and the least observed snowfall was last year.

The StormTracker7 team took a look at previous La Nina winters for the Ohio Valley to find similarities between previous La Nina’s and their snowfall outcomes.

What we found was the winter of 2022 and 2023 had a similar setup to this year, suggesting a lack of snowfall once again this year while other winters suggested a snowfall between 23 and 42.7 inches of snowfall.

This would make last year’s snowfall an outlier while other La Nina winters provided us with a closer to average snowfall amount.

Temperatures will be below average for the month of December in the lower 30s with overnight’s in the low 20s, enhancing our potential to see snowfall and freezing lakes this year.

February will be a rainy month will cold overnight temperatures in the lower 20s with max temperatures in the lower 40’s.

This will aid in our drought relief and set things up for a smooth transition into a rather nice spring.
