CHARLESTON, W.Va. – – The Director of West Virginia’s largest airport said the first days of a REAL ID requirement for boarding a plane have been fairly smooth. However, Dominque Raineri suggested travel numbers will pick up as we head into the weekend and you will still want to get there early.

“With more passengers needing to get through that checkpoint the likelihood of someone not having a REAL ID increases, those folks have to go through extra screening to get to their flight so it could slow down that check point,” she explained.

TSA has increased its personnel at West Virginia International Yeager Airport and has two screening lines. Those are currently being used for those who already have the REAL ID and those who do not. Raineri cautions at peak times it’s possible they’ll have to combine the two and just push people through as quickly as possible whether or not they have the REAL ID.

The creation of the REAL ID followed September 11th. Development has been in the works for more than two decades. The deadline has been pushed back several times to start requiring it for domestic flights and access to federal buildings.

The West Virginia DMV is still issuing the REAL ID. Officials say you may want to allow some extra time there as well if you’re trying to upgrade in the next few days.
