The Guinness world record for the tallest stack of waffles was set in a Denver backyard over Memorial Day weekend, and it's our new favorite thing.
I'm not sure whether the most amazing part about Spencer McCullough and Cory Trimm's Guinness Book of World Records attempt for the "Tallest Stack of Waffles" was the fact that they invited the press to their backyard (call OCN next time, guys!) or that it was that they were stacking, um, waffles. The event, which was even posted on Facebook, took place on Saturday morning, May 26 -- and thanks to the tweeting of Elizabeth Hernandez, a Denver Post reporter, the world enjoyed a dramatic play-by-play. ... to the moment when the record-setting duo ran out of waffles, Hernandez kept us all on the edge of our seats with bated breath.
In order to make sure the world record attempt counted, McCullough reached out to Guinness and received a 40-page PDF outlining the definition of a waffle. They also filled out the required Guinness paperwork, cleared the attempt with the City of Denver, and summoned the services of an official Denver land surveyor to make sure all the measurements were accurately recorded. All told, the record-setting attempt was squeaky clean.

The waffles were made from scratch in the house's kitchen and then broiled to give them the crusty edge needed for proper stacking.

The previous record for a waffle stack was 51 cm tall, which McCullough and Trimm ended up shattering, at 67 cm!
They probably could have gone higher, if it weren't for the fact that they ran out of waffles! They used approximately 50 pounds of mix in all.

Onlookers (who flocked from as far away as Illinois and Texas) were treated to a light breakfast while they watched, and then waffle toppings were provided for the consumption of the world's tallest waffle stack when the record-setting was complete.
