MOBILE, Ala. ( WALA ) - The South Alabama Jaguars fought hard, but lost a back-and-forth game against Georgia Southern at Hancock Whitney Stadium. The Eagles used an over eight-minute opening drive to take a 7-0 lead in the first quarter and were leading 14-3 midway through the second quarter after a 23-yard touchdown from J.C. Turner to Josh Dallas. After a short touchdown run by Fluff Bothwell, the Jags added a pair of field goals from Laith Marjan to pull within one heading into half time. From there, the game was all about momentum shifts. The third quarter belonged to the Jags. After another field goal by Marjan to take the lead, South Alabama would add two more touchdowns from Bothwell who scored on a 22-yard run and Jamaal Pritchett who recovered a fumble in the endzone to make it a 30-14 game. However, the 4th quarter would belong to Georgia Southern. The Eagles would score two touchdowns in less than a minute to pull within three points. Then with just over 8 minutes left, Dexter Williams II connected with Dalen Cobb for the go-ahead score. Quarterback Gio Lopez, who finished with 257 yards, one touchdown, and one interception was injured and ruled out late in the fourth quarter. Redshirt Sophomore Bishop Davenport finished the game and led South Alabama down the field, but the Jags couldn’t come up with a 4th down conversion which allowed Georgia Southern to run the clock out and leave Mobile with a 34-30 win. On offense, Kentrel Bullock finished with 101 yards for his second straight 100-yard game while Bothwell’s two touchdown outing gives him 10 scores on the season. On defense, linebackers Blayne Myrick and Darius McKenzie both finished with 10 tackles while McKenzie also recorded his first career sack. South Alabama falls to 4-5 on the season and will have a bye week as they get ready to take on Louisiana on November 16th.
