The South Carolina softball team is in the NCAA tournament this year after the Gamecocks earned the No. 8 national seed in this year's 64-field tournament. As a top 8 national seed, the Gamecocks will host a regional and if they win, they will host a super regional as well. The Gamecocks will play Elon in their tournament opener on Friday at 5:30 p.m. The other teams in the Columbia regional are North Florida and Virginia. They play Friday at 3 p.m. If the Gamecocks win their regional, they would host the winner of the UCLA regional which features the Bruins, UC Santa Barbara, Arizona State and San Diego State.

South Carolina has a 40-15 record entering NCAA tournament play. The Gamecocks were the No. 7 seed in the SEC Tournament, their highest seed since 2018 when they were the three seed. The Gamecocks' run in the tournament ended with a loss to Texas A&M in the quarterfinals.

South Carolina is led by first-year head coach Ashley Chastain, a former Gamecock student-athlete and graduate assistant, who was named the University of South Carolina’s 11th head softball coach on June 11, 2024.
