These special pups come after an enormous rescue in Mississippi.
Dog lovers, beware -- this is cuteness overload, and it's contagious.
Dozens of adorable rescue chihuahuas arrived in the DMV area on Monday to be put up for adoption. Around 60 dogs total made the two-day trek from Mississippi and will be split between the Loudoun County Animal Services and the Humane Rescue Alliance in D.C.
The move comes after a Mississippi breeder experienced overcrowding due to the dogs inhabiting close quarters, with 250 chihuahuas eventually wandering their property. The chihuahuas are between a few months and 7 years old.
"These dogs were part of a breeder who decided they no longer wanted to be involved in breeding," Humane Rescue Alliance's Chief Operating Officer Stephanie Shain said, according to WTOP. The nonprofit animal shelter will be taking 35 of the pups, with the rest going to Loudoun County.
Shain notes the dogs will likely be scooped up quickly due to their larger size (though their cuteness doesn't hurt either). But before they find their fur-ever homes, the dogs will need to undergo behavioral and medical exams to make sure they're in tip-top shape.
With their big eyes and floppy ears, these puppies are simply irresistible. However, those interested should expect to take them in for the long haul.
"You really are making anywhere from a 15-20 year commitment to them," Shain said.
To those interested in adoption, you can contact the Humane Rescue Alliance at 202-723-5730 or the Loudoun County Animal Services at 703-777-0406 for more information. Pictures of the available chihuahuas should be up on their respective websites soon.
