KANSAS CITY, Kan. (KCTV) - The frigid temperatures in the Kansas City metro set Sporting Kansas City and Inter Miami CF up for one of the coldest games between MLS teams in history.

Kickoff of the 7 p.m. CT contest that served as the first leg of Round One of the Concacaf Champions Cup came at 9 degrees Wednesday night. That was the coldest game in Sporting KC history.

That’s 6 degrees higher than the 3-degree kickoff temperatures in a CONCACAF Champions League match between the Colorado Rapids and Toronto FC in February 2018.

A postponement from Tuesday night allowed Children’s Mercy Park to be cleared of snow on the pitch but actually made temperatures colder for kickoff.

Friends Christopher and Harrison were planning on only staying the first half of the game.

“Cold,” said Christopher Kade. “Very Cold. I have gloves that are socks and then like 5 jackets or something, tights, and pants.”

“Very, very, very cold,” said Harrison Lane. “I’m wearing tights underneath here, then pants, a thin, shirt, and then another shirt, and then a coat and one glove.”

Siblings Yulisa and Isaias Chihuahua were braving the brutal conditions, Yulisa agreeing to join her brother after he bought the tickets.

“Horrid,” said Yulisa. “It feels so bad. My nostril hairs are sticking together, like frosting over. Doesn’t feel great, but whatcha gonna do?”

Isaias says this isn’t his first rodeo.

“A couple of weeks ago, the Chiefs game that was here that was 5 degrees,” said Isaias. “I was at that one. I’m a little bit used to the cold now, you got to living in Kansas.”

Meanwhile, several Messi fans came from out of town.

“We came from Colorado to be here,” said Bryan Mos. “It’s our first Messi game, so we are going to experience it to the fullest. We’ve been fans since I was like 9 years old.”

While Tuesday’s weather postponed the game, it didn’t stop people from coming to Children’s Mercy Park on Wednesday night. Sporting KC fan Corbin Hanning appreciates it.

“I think it’s pretty cool for the game and the love that the people have for the team,” said Hanning. “I think it’s pretty cool.”
