SPRINGFIELD — Citing concerns about fiscal upheaval in the federal government, Mayor Domenic J. Sarno is asking staff to be as frugal as possible when submitting spending requests this year.

The mayor is starting the budget process next week, scheduling meetings with the financial team and the 28 different departments. The meetings, which will be broadcast on Focus Springfield, will be held from Tuesday through Friday, he said.

“There has been much dialog about the fiscal uncertainty with some of our funding from the federal government. This, along with the potential impact upon the state’s (fiscal year) 2026 budget, can potentially have a drastic negative impact upon our own budget and the services we provide for our own residents,” Sarno wrote in a letter to the City Council and department heads.
