On Wednesday, Mayor Misty Buscher and Police Chief Ken Scarlette recognized Officers Zane Steele, DJ Mumaw, and Keagan Graves of the Springfield Police Department with the Life Saving Award and Mayor’s Certificate of Honor for their heroic actions during a stabbing incident.

In the early hours of March 11, 2025, the officers responded to a stabbing at a local establishment.

They were informed en route that the victim, an employee, was inside with serious injuries. Officers Mumaw and Steele quickly retrieved a medical bag while Officer Graves entered first to assess the scene.

Despite a chaotic environment with multiple altercations, the officers focused on the critically injured victim. Officer Graves found two severe stab wounds causing significant pain and difficulty breathing. Officer Steele retrieved two chest seals from his medical bag, and he and Officer Mumaw applied them to the wounds. Officer Graves maintained communication with the victim, keeping him alert and helping him control his breathing.

The officers ensured the victim was stabilized until Springfield Fire Department personnel arrived.

According to SFD and hospital staff, the officers' swift actions undoubtedly saved the victim’s life.

Their ability to assess the situation, locate the victim, and administer critical medical care in a high-stress environment is a testament to their professionalism, dedication, and courage.

The Springfield Police Department commended these officers for their exceptional service and life-saving actions.
