The Springfield Police Department has disciplined one supervisor and three patrol officers following an internal investigation into their response to a traffic accident involving Michael Egan on September 5, 2024.

The investigation, conducted by the department's Professional Standards Division – Internal Affairs, began the day after the incident. It involved a comprehensive review of the actions of on-duty officers, in collaboration with the Office of Corporation Counsel, to ensure compliance with applicable laws and department policies.

The Springfield Police Department emphasized the importance of transparency in critical investigations, whether criminal or related to internal discipline. "Our agency strives at every level to provide efficient response to all calls, while providing professional, empathetic service for all," the department stated.

In situations involving current or retired SPD officers in major incidents, the department's policy is to contact outside agencies to ensure a fair and thorough investigation. In this case, the Illinois State Police took over the investigation approximately 42 minutes after the initial SPD response.

Following the crash, SPD officers received multiple complaints of alleged scene mismanagement by the initial responding officers, prompting an Internal Affairs investigation. The investigation included a review of body-worn camera footage, citizen videos, and interviews with on-duty officers and civilians.

As a result, Sgt. Zander was suspended for six days for violations of Springfield Police Rule #5, concerning knowledge and violation of rules and orders, and Rule #9, addressing failure to supervise. Sgt. Zander was also ordered to complete retraining.

Officers Yanor, Wheeler, and Singletary received written reprimands for a violation of Springfield Police Rule #5 and were directed to undergo retraining.
