Western Maryland is currently under a State of Emergency following a devastating round of flooding that saw communities grappling with the fallout of historic rainfalls and subsequent water damage. Governor Wes Moore, alongside state and local officials, has been coordinating rapid response efforts in the aftermath of the storm. "After surveying the damage and receiving updates on the work still ahead in Western Maryland, I’ve declared a State of Emergency to accelerate our response," Governor Moore stated, indicating the severity of the situation and the need for urgent action. In the eye of the storm, several areas received more than 5 inches of rain, precipitating the inundation of homes and businesses and the evacuation of over 200 students and faculty from local elementary schools. Having visited the impacted Allegany County, Moore, flanked by key departmental heads, cited the critical nature of the government's prompt endeavors. The hope-infused words of Congresswoman April McClain Delaney spoke to the plight witnessed, "You don’t fully grasp the scale of it until you’re standing here, witnessing it for yourself," she told reporters, as the Office of Governor Wes Moore detailed. Addressing the immediate challenges, Russell Strickland, Secretary of the Maryland Department of Emergency Management, praised the locals' courage and the emergency response's dexterity. "The people of Western Maryland faced unimaginable flooding with courage and saved lives through the quick action of local responders," Strickland said, per the Office of Governor Wes Moore news release . The scale of damage covers several toppled structures, compromised utility lines, and interruptions to transportation routes, with the recent closure of county shelters transitioning to concerted recovery efforts. Multiple state agencies remain fully engaged in Western Maryland, as live updates for the public about ongoing road conditions and traffic updates are available through the Maryland Department of Transportation’s Traffic Incidents and Events page.
