The Virginia stay-at-home order goes into effect immediately on Monday, March 30, and will be valid until June 10.
In an effort to step up the prevention of the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19), protect the public health, and reduce hospital numbers, Governor Ralph Northam issued a stay-at-home order for Virginia residents. The order goes into effect immediately. It’s valid until June 10 unless revoked before then.
Virginia residents are to remain at their homes. They are allowed to leave their homes for services like medical attention, banking, and grocery items, as well as for fresh air and exercise while maintaining social distancing.
Governor Northam implored Virginians to “Stay at home to the greatest extent possible” during this “unprecedented and difficult time.” Many Virginians have already been practicing these guidelines, but it’s now a requirement rather than a suggestion.
During the stay-at-home order, restaurants can still be open for take-out and delivery. Businesses can still operate as long as they follow the 10 customers and under rule.
Beaches are closed for any activities other than fishing and exercising (and no groups of more than 10 people, as well as the six-foot distance rule).
The stay-at-home order comes in response to crowds congregating at beaches in the Hampton Roads area over the weekend.
The Virginia Department of Health announced earlier in the day that the number of positive coronavirus cases has risen to 1,020, including 25 deaths. No age group is immune, as there are many cases under the age of 50.
The biggest takeaway from Northam’s press conference is to only go out if you need to. This is different than wanting to go out. He suggested having a list of needs before going to the grocery store, rather than going out for one item.
Governor Northam also talked about issues such as applying for Title 32 and Federal Major Disaster status, as well as receiving USDA approval for emergency food assistance. Residents who ignore the Virginia stay-at-home order issued by Northam could face a penalty of a Class One misdemeanor.
Governors Larry Hogan, Phil Murphy, and Roy Cooper have also issued a stay-at-home order for Maryland, New Jersey, and North Carolina, respectively.
