Summertime is making an early visit to the plains this weekend. Temperatures have struggled to cool overnight, hanging on in the 50s and 60s. This mild start will give us a good shot of making it into the 90s in some places later today.

A cold front is moving in today. Ahead of the front will be warmest, behind the front looks milder.

Winds will be a bit of a nuisance, with 30 to 40 mph gusts and occasional gusts up to 50mph. The strongest winds will stay in southeast and northwest Kansas. By afternoon, we will see that wind switch to the northwest as our cold front arrives.

The front will get to work first in northwest Kansas, where highs will be more comfortable in the 70s. Areas that the front does not reach before early afternoon have the best chance of seeing 90s, especially closer to Wichita and areas along the Oklahoma state line.

The front comes through dry, but a small disturbance lagging behind the front may squeeze out some showers and a storm or two in northwest Kansas toward sunset. Most will stay dry.

Temperatures drop overnight with the northwest wind persisting, lows ranging from the 30s to the 50s.

Monday looks more comfortable with highs in the 60s for most. Winds will remain gusty, but sunshine will help to make up the difference.

Tuesday looks like a quiet day, then we see increasing storm chances toward the late week. A disturbance passing through Wednesday brings a few scattered showers and storms.

Temperatures rise steadily with another abnormally warm day Thursday.

A stronger, more moisture-rich system arrives by Friday into the weekend. Rain may skirt along and east of the turnpike Friday with some strong to severe storms possible.

Then more showers and storms build in for the weekend, with healthier chances of moisture overspreading the region.
