Plus, in addition to fun, character-building is a top priority. Every camper participates in creating and establishing a character-based Code of Living with their fellow unit members that each person agrees to abide by.

Founded in 1989, the John Austin "Jack" Cheley Foundation (JAC Foundation) was established to fulfill his dream of making summer camp available to anyone that deserves it who could otherwise not afford it. According to their website mission statement, "The John Austin Cheley Foundation funds need-based camperships for high potential youth to attend extended-stay wilderness summer camps that have a proven track record of positively impacting youth development."

Since then, and in keeping with his memory, the JAC Foundation has awarded more than 1,100 campers with scholarships ("camperships"), valued at over $4 million.
