MORGANTOWN — If the winter transfer portal period was an indication of what Rich Rodriguez and West Virginia would do in the spring portal, it’d mean they were going to be very active. And, they have.

However, the winter portal of 31 additions wasn’t expected during the spring period, since those large numbers were mostly due to the coaching change. There were a lot of players leaving this period because Rodriguez was over the 105 transfer limit, making room to add more transfers, but Rodriguez has bit off more than he can chew so far, especially after this week going over the limit.

This was one of Rodriguez’s busiest weeks in the portal. Nine portalers announced their commitment to the Mountaineers starting from Sunday, April 27, two days after the window closed for new additions.

It’s been hard keeping track of Rodriguez’s additions this week and there were some big ones with some SEC additions to the roster that are noteworthy.

Here are all the transfer additions Rodriguez from this week.

Akron DB, Darrian Lewis

Akron defensive back Darrian Lewis was arguably Rodriguez’s biggest portal addition this period, and he committed this week. Lewis took an official visit on April 23 and committed a week later to the Mountaineers.

Lewis was one of the top defensive backs on the board in the spring as a three-star portal prospect and ranked the 79th safety for the winter and spring combined, according to 247Sports. Lewis had back-to-back 74-tackle seasons and 15 pass breakups with two interceptions over three seasons with the Zips.

Lewis will make an immediate impact in a secondary that lost Garnett Hollis Jr. to the pros.

Mississippi State OL, Carson Lee

Up there with the Darrian Lewis additions was adding Mississippi State offensive lineman Carson Lee on Wednesday. Lee spent most of his time with Eastern Michigan, though, and just spent the spring with the Bulldogs.

Lee was another top player in the portal at his position. He was ranked as the 31st lineman in the portal in the winter and spring combined and was one of 247Sports’ top 10 players available. He started 10 games in the interior offensive line, but has played tackle, too.

Lee’s another player that can be a Day 1 starter with his 6-foot-3, 320-pound size and his versatility to play multiple positions.

SMU RB, Jaylan Knighton

Jaylan Knighton was the first running back Rich Rodriguez added in the portal. Knighton was a big addition coming from SMU.

Knighton was injured and didn’t see too much action last year on the ACC Champion-runner-up squad, but the year prior, he had 136 carries for 745 yards and seven touchdowns. He also spent two years at Miami, where he committed when he was a four-star high school prospect.

Knighton provides another veteran to the running back room and was the first running back picked up by former ACC running backs coach Larry Porter.

Jacksonville State WR, Jordan McCants

Rich Rodriguez brought over multiple Jacksonville State players, and he added one more at receiver, Jordan McCants.

McCants isn’t a large receiver at 5-foot-11 and could be more of a developmental receiver with two more years of eligibility left. He didn’t see the field too much with the Gamecocks and only had 29 grabs.

McCants knows Rodriguez’s system, so he might see more action than just be another depth piece and future starter.

Texas OL, Malik Agbo

Texas offensive lineman Malik Agbo was another big addition to the offensive line. Rodriguez’s most added position has been to the line, and it’s been from big Power Four schools.

Agbo is another versatile player who can play multiple positions on the line. He played 32 games in two seasons with the Longhorns and is looking for a little more playing time with the Mountaineers.

Agbo could be another developmental player with two years of eligibility left.

UNLV LB, John Lewis

West Virginia hasn’t added too many linebackers so far this portal period but made a splash adding veteran linebacker John Lewis to the roster.

Lewis, who played mostly at Mississippi State, made 21 tackles with seven solo stops last season. He has four seasons of experience at the SEC level.

The linebacker room needed a boost and a leader like Lewis could be what it needed to be a force for Zac Alley’s defense.

South Carolina State, WR Justin Smith-Brown

South Carolina State receiver Justin Smith-Brown might be the jump ball threat Rich Rodriguez was searching for at 6-foot-1.

Smith-Brown is coming off his best season with 54 grabs for 749 yards and four scores. He’s another veteran addition, playing three seasons already, who’ll make an impact in the back of the end zones and deep down the field.

This is Smith-Brown’s final season in college, so it’s his last chance to make an impact.

Ferris State RB, Kannon Katzer

After adding Knighton earlier in the week, West Virginia concluded the busy week with Ferris State running back Kannon Katzer from Division II.

Katzer had a productive season at the Division II level. He rushed for over 1,128 yards, on 128 carries and 11 touchdowns. He has some experience at the Division I level, playing for Washington State for a season, too.

Katzer, with two years of eligibility left, will have time to settle in and get a feel again for the Division I and Power Four level again.

JUCO DB, Kaleb Gray

JUCO defensive back Kaleb Gray is another player who’ll see more playing time in the coming years, with three seasons left of eligibility.

Gray received offers from a couple of smaller Division I programs. West Virginia was one of the only Power Four schools. He had 32 tackles and forced three fumbles in his redshirt freshman season.

Gray will be a name to look for in the coming years.
