WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) - A 24-year-old woman has been booked into jail for allegedly crashing a stolen van, killing a 43-year-old woman in northeast Wichita earlier this week.

Sedgwick County Jail records show Katelyn Barrioz was booked Tuesday evening for first-degree murder, aggravated burglary and two counts of aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer.

Police said Barrioz was one of two people who fled from a stolen vehicle near 35th Street North and Webb. She's accused of then stealing a transit van from a business. According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, Barrioz was driving the stolen van westbound in the eastbound lanes of 29th Street from Webb Road. Mandy Buckwalter's sedan was eastbound. Both vehicles attempted evasive maneuvers but collided head-on. Buckwalter died at the scene and Barrioz was taken to the hospital.

The investigation is ongoing with assistance from the Kansas Highway Patrol, police said Monday. Formal charged have not yet been filed.

Barrioz also has on her booking log multiple counts stemming from prior arrests. They include theft, flee and elude, criminal deprivation of property and criminal damage to property.

The other suspect tied to the initial stolen vehicle was also arrested, police said. Booking records identified him as Michael Lawler. He was arrested for criminal depravation of a vehicle and driving while suspended/canceled/revoked. He did not appear on the jail's website Wednesday.

Heartspring on Tuesday shared a picture of Buckwalter and said she was " a cherished colleague who made a lasting difference in the lives of the children in our care."
