Located just 75 miles from Washington, D.C., Shenandoah National Park is the perfect getaway if you're looking to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The park is a playground for adventure, education, and a whole lot of fun! More than 500 miles of hiking trails await you, and a majority of the 196,000 acres of land are open to backcountry camping, so you can spend your entire trip outdoors. There's also plenty of chances for some birdwatching and wildlife viewing. View a full map of the trails here. [gallery size="large" ids="1778,1777,1776,1775,1774"] If you're interested in camping, there are four campgrounds: Matthews Arm, Big Meadows, Lewis Mountain, and Loft Mountain. Backcountry camping is also an option, and all you'll need is a (free) permit, which you can obtain at one of the visitor contact stations or by having it mailed to you.
