Throughout the year, five Target stores in the Denver metro area will be equipped with solar panels to conquer the goal of operating clean and energy-efficient buildings.

It was announced on Tuesday that the Target Corporation will be installing solar power systems on five Denver-based stores, which is a first in Colorado. The solar panels will generate a third of the power each of the stores consumes, saving energy. This is part of Target’s overarching plan to install solar panels on 500 store rooftops by 2020. Installation is currently underway for the five Denver locations by the SunPower Corporation.

The Five Locations:

-Aurora South: 15700 East Briarwood Circle - expected completion in March

-Arapahoe: 6767 South Clinton Street - expected completion in March

-Arvada: 7899 Wadsworth Boulevard - expected completion in March

-Edgewater: 1985 Sheridan Boulevard - expected completion in April

-Highlands Ranch: 1265 Sergeant Jon Stiles Drive - expected completion in December

Throughout the year, the five stores will produce more than 3,800 megawatt-hours of power. That is enough to power 285 homes for an entire year! “We are proud to be helping the state reach its clean energy goals with more than 10 percent of our stores in Colorado now outfitted with solar installations… optimistic about growing our solar footprint in the state in the future,” said John Leisen, Target’s vice president for properties. Target received the top spot among American businesses who are adding solar panels to their operations, according to a 2016 report from the Solar Energy Industries Association. America's top companies operated over 1,100 megawatts worth of power with solar panels. The total amount of energy generated through those systems was enough to meet the needs of 193,000 homes every year. “We’re proud to partner with Target as it leads the nation’s retail industry in solar adoption,” said Nam Nguyen, SunPower Corporation’s senior vice president for commercial system.
