Polls are open for special elections today in Florida — elections that will test President Donald Trump and his control of Congress .

Republicans currently hold a very thin majority of 218 seats versus the Democrats' 213 in the House of Representatives, with 4 vacancies remaining. At this time Senate is also held by a Republican majority of 53 plus 45 Democrats and two Independents.

Two vacancies were created by the resignation of Florida Republicans' Rep. Michael Waltz and Rep. Matt Gaetz , after being chosen for Trump's Cabinet. The other two vacancies were created after the recent deaths of Democrats' Rep. Raul M Grijalva of Arizona and Rep. Sylvester Turner of Texas in the month of March.

The Florida special elections are the first since Trump's reelection and will replace the two Republican vacancies. They have since drawn a lot of attention and fundraising by Democrats that are looking to boost their control in numbers and eventually gain control of the House.

The Florida vacancies and thinning House margins sparked Trump to withdraw New York's Republican Rep. Elise Stefanik's name from consideration for U.N. ambassador, "We don't want to take any chances," he said last week in the Oval Office. "It's as simple as that. It's basic politics."

At this time, Trump and the Republican party hold control of the White House and Congress.

Who's running in the Florida special elections today?

Republican Jimmy Patronis, the state's chief financial officer, and Democrat Gay Valimont are running to replace Rep. Matt Gaetz in Florida's 1st congressional District.

Republican Randy Fine is up against Democrat Josh Weil in Florida's 6th Congressional District.

The race has gained national attention under the circumstances, though both races are in what are considered heavily Republican districts.
