The WalletHub report on the safest cities in America goes deeper than that. "The safest cities in America protect residents from these threats of bodily harm and property damage, but on top of that, they also help secure people’s financial safety," says WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo . "Financial safety includes things like minimizing the risk of fraud and identity theft, keeping the population employed and insured, and combating homelessness.” The study cited 41 key dimensions in three categories: home and community safety, natural disaster risk, and financial safety. Key metrics included not only violent crime statistics but also attributes such as the share of the population that's uninsured, the foreclosure rate, and the share of residents who have a retirement plan. With natural disaster risk included, it comes as no surprise that the list is dominated by Northeastern cities, which are less prone to extreme weather events like hurricanes, tornadoes, and wildfires. (The region is, however, at increased risk for flooding, especially along the coastline.) South Burlington's high safety score is in part due to its safe roads. It has the lowest pedestrian fatality rate in the country along with the 13th-lowest percentage of uninsured motorists. If an accident does happen, the city benefits from having the ninth-highest number of EMTs and paramedics per capita. "One area where South Burlington really shines, which many people might not think about, is financial safety," adds the report. "It has the lowest unemployment rate in the country, at 1.9%, the second-lowest share of seriously underwater mortgages, and the third-fewest non-business bankruptcy filings per capita over the past year. This demonstrates that residents are doing well financially and are at a reduced risk of being unable to pay their bills, losing their property, or becoming homeless." It also helps that you're not likely to suffer from a natural disaster while living here. The city has the 14th-lowest risk of flooding, 21st-lowest risk of tornadoes, and 31st-lowest risk of wildfires. Casper has the lowest pedestrian fatality rates and the 32nd-lowest aggravated assault rate. It also ranks as the second-safest city for walking alone at night and the fourth-safest for walking alone during the day, according to studies by Numbeo. The city also has the 42nd-lowest murder rate among the more than 180 cities in the study. "Casper residents are also quite safe from fraudsters," says the study. The city has the fewest identity theft complaints and the second-fewest fraud complaints per capita. It also has the fifth-lowest percentage of uninsured drivers. Warwick is tops for its low crime rate: It has the lowest number of murders and the second-lowest number of aggravated assaults per capita. It also has the fewest thefts per capita, so residents can worry less about both violent and nonviolent crimes. Nor do you have to worry about extreme weather. Sitting on Greenwich Bay, the metro has the seventh-lowest risk of hail, 10th-lowest risk of wildfires, 23rd-lowest risk of tornadoes, and 29th-lowest risk of earthquakes. Its residents are also financially safe. It has the seventh-lowest percentage of residents without health insurance, the sixth-lowest percentage who are living in poverty, and the 20th-fewest fraud complaints per capita. As would be expected, downtown Burlington has the same natural disaster risk rank as No. 1-ranked South Burlington, at six. But it ranks lower for financial safety (No. 7) and then takes a plunge for home and community safety (No. 38). Its natural disaster risk is fairly low (No. 26) but higher than you would expect. For one, Boise is ranked fifth in the country for earthquake risk, according to FEMA . Believe it or not, Idaho has experienced two of the largest earthquakes in the continental U.S. in the past 50 years. Still, earthquakes aren't very common, and even if one does strike, Idaho's low population keeps it relatively safe. Given that Yonkers abuts the Bronx, it wouldn't be top of mind for safety. But the unofficial sixth borough of New York City ranks No. 3 for home and community safety, with a low crime rate, a large law enforcement and firefighter population, and a low number of homeless. Columbia comes in first for home and community safety, meaning it ranks the highest of all the cities in metrics such as having a low violent and petty crime rate, and having plenty of EMTs, paramedics, law enforcement personnel, and firefighters per capita, as well as a high score in perceived safety in walking alone at night or during the day. There is also a very low drug death rate and very few pedestrian fatalities. Portland ranks second for financial safety, getting top scores in metrics like unemployment rate, share of uninsured, job security, and share of households with emergency savings and a retirement plan. This coastal town ranks high for home and community safety (No. 15), with a low violent crime and petty crime rate, and low drug deaths and traffic fatalities.
