Sure, there are plenty of grocery stores in Washington, D.C., but if you are trying to eat healthily or want something specific, there are only a select few that have what you need.

Here's a roundup of the best health food stores in the D.C. area, as well as a little blurb about what each one can offer you.

Whole Foods

Various locations in Washington, D.C.

You’ve probably heard of Whole Foods; they kind of tend to be everywhere. Yes, we’re not denying it’s a little pricier than the rest, but it also has a lot of products you wouldn’t be able to find anywhere else. Plus, now that they were bought by Amazon, Prime members are starting to see some pretty significant discounts.

This is best if you love to shop fresh or organic and are looking for things like matcha powder.

Yes! Organic Market

Various locations in Washington, D.C.

There are a few Yes! Organic locations in Washington, D.C. If you love that local, family-owned feel, this is the health food store of your dreams. The selection is not overwhelming, but you’ll always find fresh produce and meats, as well as a selection of nutritional supplements.

Come here for the customer service and community vibes. It’s almost like you’re at the corner store in New York City -- almost

Glen’s Garden Market

2001 S St. NW, Washington, D.C., 20009

Glen’s is just as good for lunch, coffee, and happy hours as it is for actual groceries. Here you’ll find interesting snacks that don’t exist in regular grocery stores, fresh-pressed juices, and a selection of the stinkiest cheese to pair with the most delicate of meats (looking at you, prosciutto). You will also find that Glen’s makes excellent sandwiches from (really) fresh ingredients and has a well-rounded, made-daily deli menu, as well as premium coffee roasts and local craft beer that will run you only $4 during happy hour (4-7 p.m.).

Streets Market

Various locations in Washington D.C.

Streets Market is like the ultimate corner market, but so much better than a 7Eleven. Essentially, it’s got all the basics -- from the almond milk you ran out of, to the rye bread you forgot to pick up. You can also grab a last-minute bottle of wine or case of beer, as well as some produce. Don’t expect it to be a full-service shop, but do expect everything to be fresh and organic.

MOM’s Organic Market

1501 New York Avenue NE, Washington, D.C., 20002

MOM’s Organic Market is similar to Yes! Organic Market. It’s local, with a cute rags-to-riches origin story, and if you could describe a grocery store as charming, this would be it. From a business that started in a mother’s garage in Maryland, it has now expanded to six states. Mom’s Organic Market prides itself on providing the freshest products and friendliest customer service. Who wouldn’t want to shop there?

Dean and DeLuca

3276 M St., NW, Washington, D.C., 20007

Dean and DeLuca has got your fill of specialty products and delicious and healthy pre-prepared meals, as well as an assortment of organic cheese, meats, and even wines. There is currently only one location in Washington, D.C., in the neighborhood of Georgetown, but you’ll love wandering over there on a beautiful sunny day. If you love gourmet, this is the place.

Glut Food Co-op

4005 34th St., Mt Rainier, MD 20712

Co-op grocery stores always have the freshest selections. If you aren’t sure what a co-op is, it’s basically a grocery store where the customers agree to be members of the co-op, therefore agreeing to volunteer to help the store by cleaning and working the cash register -- that kind of thing. But with your membership comes access to some of the best produce, meats, and dairy in the city.

If you love to have an active role in your community and you also happen to be a health nut, this is just the health store for you.
