A spoiler-free review of the latest horror flick to hit the big screen, The Curse of La Llorona.

I know that horror movies are an acquired taste for a lot of people, and I also understand why people can be cynical of new horror movies, too. The horror genre has a history of bad films that are well known by now.

So, when I heard that there was a curse of La Llorona movie coming to theaters, I was skeptical. The idea of bringing the old Mexican legend of the weeping woman to the big screen sounded like it would be filled with hammy acting, an overabundance of jump scares, and lots of dumb plot points. However, I sat down for a surprisingly decent experience.

Below is a spoiler-free review to The Curse of La Llorona.

The Curse of La Llorona stars Linda Cardellini as Anne Tate-Garcia, a busy social worker who tries to balance her job and take care of her kids. After she walks in on what seems to be an abuse incident, at first, she later learns that the curse has passed on from one family to hers. She slowly becomes more and more desperate, wondering if there's any hope to save her family.

Now, I am not going to say that this movie was perfect or pristine. The story itself was something we've all seen before; the big bad thing haunting a poor family. While it is interesting to see this old Mexican legend come to life, it didn't save this movie from being filled with common tropes. That being said, the story was decently paced. They didn't jump around from location to location or try to rush things to get to the scares.

The child actors were actually well trained, as well. They acted well enough to where it sucked me into the moment of scared kids fighting for their lives against an unspeakable evil.

If there were any weaknesses to the movie, it was the common horror movie tropes. The movie felt like it had opportunities gift wrapped to them to be unique, though, it never really happened. You could replace La Llorona with another iconic horror film character and it would mostly be the same. Remember, the same thing doesn't automatically make it bad.

Overall, The Curse of La Llorona was an enjoyable summer romp. While I may not watch it over and over until the DVD cracks, I think it's a good summer film that you can enjoy with friends and family.
