Ahead of Hong Kong’s giant panda cubs debuting to the public for the first time on February 16, the government has opened the naming competition for these two baby bears. All Hong Kong residents are invited to submit a pair of names for the twin cubs that reflect their physical traits and characteristics.

Each participant can only submit one entry, so choose wisely. Aside from providing the names, a short description of the proposed choices to explain their meanings is also required. The entries will then be judged on how meaningful and creative they are, and how well they reflect the youthful, vivacious energy of the cubs. The top entry will win an Ocean Park annual membership for four adults, plush toys of both the cubs, Ocean Park food and beverage vouchers, and a Chow Tai Fook gift voucher. Eight other notable entries will also each be awarded an Ocean Park annual membership for two adults, giant panda souvenirs, and Ocean Park F&B vouchers.

The cubs’ naming competition is open from now until March 7. Since the giant panda Ying Ying gave birth to the twins last August, they have been dubbed Elder Sister and Little Brother. These nicknames will not be considered as official names, but they will most likely be retained as affectionate monikers for our city’s cherished baby bears.
