WICHITA, Kan. ( KWCH /Gray News) - A 13-year-old boy from Kansas who suffered a brain injury in March while playing in a basketball tournament has died.

According to Just A Kid From Wichita , a grassroots athletic program in Wichita, Shama’ar Jefferson sadly died from his injuries.

Loved ones of Shama’ar said he was rushed to the hospital on March 30 after suffering a traumatic brain injury during a basketball game.

According to the boy’s family, Shama’ar said his head was hurting, and he had blurry vision after playing the first half of the game. The 13-year-old passed a concussion test but later collapsed.

Shama’ar was taken to Wesley Children’s Hospital. He went into surgery after doctors found a brain bleed.

“We found that he had a brain bleed, needing brain surgery and intensive care,” his parents shared through a GoFundMe .

The family said they were by his side for his recovery effort while moving to Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City and working on getting a clearer prognosis.

However, on April 20, Shama’ar’s mother, Shaquela Cornwell, said that her son still had not woken up since collapsing.

“He’s a spectacular kid, and for this to happen, there are no words to describe the things he’s going through. It just hurts me,” Cornwell shared last month.

The family’s fundraising efforts raised more than $15,000 to help with Shama’ar’s medical expenses.
