In real estate, especially on the populous East Coast, land and housing are limited.
But we’ve learned to be creative about where we live, and I love a home with a little bit of history and character, don’t you? Think about all the stories you can tell about the house to anyone who will listen.
There have been several houses in the D.C., Maryland, and Virginia area that have been converted from previous uses to residential living, and I’ve rounded up my four favorites for you to browse.
And the best part? All of them are for sale if you have the urge to buy!
Historic Sandidges Mill
372 Sandidges Road, Amherst, Virginia 24521
Let’s start with something cute, historic, and incredibly affordable. The Historic Sandidges Mill was originally built in the 1880s and has been completely renovated from a mill for residential living. It’s currently on the market for only $250,000 and features 2,614 square feet of living space and 1.25 acres of land. The house has two bedrooms and two bathrooms, with a loft for extra space.
If you love looking out at nature, you'll have plenty of trees surrounding you, as well as mountains in the background.

Historic Lucky Pines
374 Paper Mill Drive Hampstead, Maryland, 21074
I watch a lot of Fixer Upper on HGTV, and seeing Joanna renovate old barns into these absolutely gorgeous homes kind of makes me want to live in one myself. And if you feel the same way (and you’re looking to buy), you’re in luck. The Historic Lucky Pines has been completely transformed from a 1930s-era farmhouse into a luxurious residence with more than five acres of private land, four bedrooms, and three and a half bathrooms. The inside is adorned with plenty of charming wood details, from the beams to the hardwood floors.
It’s currently on the market for $699,900.

Historic Beach House on Shady Corner Lot
309 Strawberry Street, Cape Charles, Virginia 23310
This house used to be a general store in the small, beachy town of Cape Charles, Virginia, circa 1920s. It’s now been completely converted into the most adorable beach house for you and your people to enjoy. I like beach houses that have that cute, beachy feel (beach houses are supposed to look different than regular houses, right?), and this one definitely fits the bill. I mean, just look at those blue shutter windows! The home has three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a total of 1,824 square feet of living space. It can all be yours for $339,000.
Can you just imagine spending your summers here?

Quirky Barn Conversion
501 Henry Avenue, Pulaski, Virginia, 24301
Another barn renovation, I know, but I just can’t help it -- they’re so cool! This one is currently for sale for only $89,900 (had to double-check, because is that even real??), and is located in the countryside with beautiful and historic details inside and out. It was built in 1916 and features four bedrooms, two baths, and 1,560 total square feet.
The point of this home is not to completely change it into this modern luxury space, but rather to keep a lot of the charm of the original barn to create a country rustic feel. And I kind of love that.
If you love the country, and you want a great deal, pick this house up before someone else does!
