How windy is Chicago?
Different articles cite various average wind speeds, but the number seems to land somewhere
between 9.9 and 10.5 mph .
The strongest gust recorded in the city's history was 87 mph on Feb. 12, 1894, according to the National Weather Service.
Why is it called the Windy City?
The most obvious
explanation for the nickname appears to come from the frigid gusts that blow from Lake Michigan into the city, according to History.com. But another theory posits the name refers to the city's residents and politicians, who have been deemed by some in the past to be "full of hot air."
