The Virginia couple's 2,200-mile hike of the Appalachian Trail took five months.

A couple of residents of Stuarts Draft, Virginia, got engaged in true Virginia style. Here's the story, per NBC12.

Daniel Gayle and Laura Klein met in Nepal, their hearts joined by a desire to travel and see the world. And after six years of dating, Daniel knew it was time to pop the question. 

How? Ultimately, he decided that the end of the Appalachian Trail, which they were planning to hike, would be the spot to get on one knee: Katahdin, Maine. So before the hike, he sewed a secret compartment on his backpack that housed the ring throughout the 2,200-mile trek through the mountains. 

And after they took their last steps on their five-month journey, Daniel took the ring out of its secret hiding place, got on one knee, and asked Laura to be his wife—to continue their journey for a lifetime.

It turns out Laura even did a bit of the ring-bearing herself on the hike. Daniel told NBC, "I would estimate she carried her engagement ring for a hundred-plus miles when we would just switch backpacks, and she had no idea she was carrying her own engagement ring for all those miles."
