It feels like Washington, D.C., has cool and trendy neighborhoods pop up all the time. While all these neighborhoods have their own appealing qualities, only one can claim to be one of the 12 coolest neighborhoods in the world.

With the advice of travel experts, Forbes compiled a list of the 12 coolest neighborhoods in the world. Author Ann Abel writes, "We all know that the best way to really know a city isn’t to go to the central square or major museums, or even the most tourist-trodden neighborhoods. What’s more interesting is discovering the up-and-coming neighborhoods where local creatives are settling in and setting up shop."

Melissa Biggs Bradley, founder of the travel website Indagare, said, "The Navy Yard area is the fastest-growing neighborhood in Washington, D.C., and it is slated to develop three million square feet for residential and office buildings, pedestrian space and retail and dining for 2030—as well as its first hotel."

Not only is Navy Yard up-and-coming, but it is also a cultural institution in Washington, D.C. Established in 1799, the Navy Yard used to serve as a shipyard and is the oldest shore establishment of the U.S. Navy, hence the neighborhood's name.

While it's now the administrative center for the U.S. Navy, the neighborhood is also a fun and trendy area to hang out. District residents can check out the Yards Park along the waterfront, catch a Washington Nationals Game, and drink craft beer at the new microbreweries. Navy Yard also just introduced Audi Field which will host D.C. United games. The Forbes article points to creative and cool restaurants in the area, such as Ice Cream Jubilee, where you can get grown-up flavors of ice cream -- like honey lemon lavender, banana bourbon caramel, and matcha green tea.

The Navy Yard and Chicago's Pilsen neighborhood were the only two American neighborhoods on the list. The other neighborhoods are Sants, Barcelona; Amsterdam Noord, Amsterdam; Getsemani, Cartagena; Maboneg, Johannesburg; Plekhanov, Tbilisi; Casco Viejo, Panama City; District 5, Saigon; Keramikos, Athens; Seaongsu-dong, Seoul; and Kalk Bay, Cape Town.

Now go out there and check out the Navy Yard neighborhood! Summer is the perfect time to stroll along the water and catch a sports game.
