Tips for Winter Cycling

It might sound crazy to some but seasonal change can’t stop you from cycling, and it shouldn’t! Here are 8 tips to make make winter cycling enjoyable.

Clothing:

-Think in terms of head, hands, feet and torso -Windproof, thermal and waterproof gear -Balaclava under your helmet -Riding vest -Long fingered gloves/ mittens -Thermal socks (sometimes 2 pairs if it is really cold) -Thermal shoe covers -Leg warmers to protect knees for below 60 degrees temps   If you prep yourself with the proper clothing, winter cycling should be nothing but a light breeze!

Start Warm:

-Always start your ride feeling warm, warm up your muscles a good bit before heading out for winter cycling -Doesn't hurt to drink a hot drink before you step outside

Be Visible:

-Brightly colored clothing -Use reflectors and lights -LED Lights! Make sure you have your headlight & rear flashers (red and blue lights are good option)   Being visible while you ride is essential regardless of the weather. Always follow these steps even when you’re not winter cycling.

Be prepared:

-Plan route in advance and make sure it’s clear and safe -Check weather forecast -Pay attention to wind- try and do first half of your ride into a headwind and return in the tailwind.

Bike Care:

-Clean bike, chain, gears, brakes and wheel rims on a regular basis -Lube chains and gears on a more frequent basis and make sure cables are in good shape. Salty water off gritted roads and water getting into exposed cables can cause issues with components -Check for wear on rims and brake blocks

Tires:

-Get wider tires with deeper grooves -Lower your tire pressure to maintain traction

Other essentials:

-Mudguards are a must -Sunglasses to save your from the glare from the snow and salt kick -Eat enough before and during the ride -Bring water, stay hydrated -Friends! Don’t endure the cold alone. We haven’t let a blizzard stop us before...why stop us now. Grab your bike and ride through the winter chill!
