The Kansas State High School Activities Association swimming and diving state championships begin this week. The three-day event will start Thursday and will conclude Saturday. The Class 6A and the Class 5-1A state championships will take place at the Shawnee Mission School District Aquatic Center. There are a few athletes from the Topeka area that are seeded in the top 10 in their respective events. Let's take a look at the local standouts and the schedule of events.
Truman Brede, Shawnee Heights
The senior is the highest-ranked swimmer from Shawnee County. He ranks fourth in Class 5-1A's 100-yard backstroke. His time of 55.83 seconds is just behind Lansing's Zach Mendez's 54.48, which ranks first. Brede also ranks 16th in the 200 freestyle. Jaxon Cowdin, Topeka High
The top diver from Shawnee County is ready to compete in his final state championship. Cowdin ranks sixth in Class 6A in 11-dive scores. He also ranks eighth in 6-dive scoring. Cowdin has captured in the city title and the Centennial League Championship this year. Peyton Holmes, Seaman
