TOPEKA ( KSNT ) – The Topeka Zoo & Conservation Center is mourning the loss of Spike, a cape porcupine, who arrived at the zoo in 2003. Spike was 22-years-old and was a big hit with visitors and staff. The zoo said Spike exceeded the median life expectancy for a cape porcupine by seven years. “Spike will be deeply missed by our team,” said Zookeeper Joe Hood. “His soft vocalizations and enthusiasm for snacks were a joy to experience every morning. I’m grateful to have worked with him for so long.” Spike was known for having a unique personality and unique eating style. The zoo said his eating preferences changed yearly but his favorites were corn, watermelon, peeled kiwi and honey. The zoo is inviting the community to share memories of Spike on its social media sites. For more local news, click here .
