The Trump administration is planning to disband the governing board that oversees the U.S. Postal Service and place the agency under the control of his administration.

According to reports from The Washington Post and the Wall Street Journal , Trump is planning to issue an executive order soon that would disband the Board of Governors and place the Postal Service under the direct control of the Department of Commerce, which is run by Secretary Howard Lutnick.

One official told the Wall Street Journal that the board plans to fight the move and is seeking legal counsel. Board members are appointed by the president and confirmed by the Senate.

A White House official denied that Trump planned to sign such an order, according to CNN . The Post said that any plance to place the Commerce Department in charge of the USPS would likely violate federal law.

In December, Trump said he considering privatizing the agency, which is something he frequently talked about doing during his first term.

“There is a lot of talk about the Postal Service being taken private,” Trump said back in September. “It’s an idea that a lot of people have liked for a long time.”

Earlier this week, Postmaster General Louis DeJoy said he would step down after five years into a 10-year term. He was appointed in 2020 during Trump’s first term.

Privatization of the post office, a service that predates the formation of the United States, could dramatically change the way people get their mail and packages, which includes online prescriptions, checks and mail-in ballots.

“The U.S. Postal Service is wildly popular with the American people, and its service is essential and irreplaceable,” said Rep. Don Beyer (D., Va.), per the Wall Street Journal. “Nobody voted for this. It is brazenly illegal, unconstitutional and corrupt.”

“The anxiety over the Postal Service is not only three-quarters of a million workers,” James O’Rourke, who studies the Postal Service at the University of Notre Dame’s Mendoza College of Business, said to the Washington Post. “It’s that this is something that does not belong to the president or the White House. It belongs to the American people.”

The service has been losing money for many years due to declining mail volumes, but reported $144 million in net income for the final three months of 2024, CNN said.
