The Mid City community is reacting to a deadly shooting that took place over the weekend at a popular restaurant. The incident occurred Saturday night at the Twin Peaks restaurant on University Drive. Police confirmed that what began as an argument inside Twin Peaks escalated into a deadly shooting, resulting in one person killed and two others injured. Twenty-one-year-old Jeremiah Matkins of Huntsville has been charged with murder in connection with the death of 23-year-old Ray’shun Bates of Decatur. Two other people were injured in the shooting and were treated at the hospital. Now, some businesses in the Mid City area are concerned that the shooting could impact their business and the family-friendly atmosphere in the area. Elly Mobley, an assistant manager at Tous les Jours, shared her thoughts: “A little bit concerned... It’s always in the back of your mind; you’re always worried about it, but for it to be so close, like in a place where there’s a lot of families and a lot of people going back and forth, especially for a place that’s growing as much as Mid City is, it’s definitely kind of worrying a little bit.” Understandably, the shooting has many people on edge, including Lynda Pannenton, who told WAAY 31 she recently moved to Huntsville because it feels safer than her previous home. She expressed her concerns, saying she would hate to see crime increase in the area. “Because where I came from, where I moved from, it’s a common occurrence—shootings and hijackings—and I just don’t want to see that happen to this area; it’s so nice here,” said Pannenton. While some Mid City area businesses worry about the impact of this shooting, others, like waitress Britney Harlow, feel this incident could happen anywhere. “Fortunately, I was not working that night, but it could happen anywhere. I mean, nowadays it’s a big city, a small city; I live in Florence, Alabama, and I mean, we have that a lot, so that doesn’t make me feel any different, I guess,” said Harlow. State investigators reported that a uniformed HPD officer was working a departmentally approved off-duty security job at the restaurant when the shooting occurred. The officer fired his weapon but did not hit anyone. The accused shooter, Jeremiah Matkins, is being held at the Madison County Jail on a $50,000 bond.
