Two people were killed in a head-on collision on Illinois 97, just west of Farmington Cemetery Road in rural Sangamon County, near 2:30 a.m. Saturday, according to Illinois State Police officials.

The site of the crash was about eight miles northwest of Springfield.

A driver headed east on Route 97 crossed the centerline and struck the driver of another vehicle traveling the opposite direction.

The reason for why the driver crossed the centerline, according to a report provided by Trooper Jayme Bufford of the ISP, was "unknown."

Neither vehicle had any passengers.

A 63-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Sangamon County Coroner Jim Allmon.

A 43-year-old woman was taken to Springfield Memorial Hospital where she later died.

The identities will be released after families are notified, Allmon said.

Traffic in both directions was shut down on Route 97 for about six hours Saturday morning, according to ISP.

The crash remains under investigation.
