At least two people under the age of 18 were shot Friday afternoon in Annapolis, according to police spokesperson Miguel Dennis.

Dennis said the shooting occurred sometime after 4 p.m. near the intersection of Copeland and Royal streets, which border the Bywater Mutual Homes community.

The two victims were shot in the “lower extremities, Dennis said, and were taken to area hospitals by a Maryland State Police helicopter, the state agency confirmed.

The victims’ ages and genders have not been announced, nor has their medical status.

As of 5:40 p.m., the crime scene is still active with police and fire departments on site, Dennis said.

So far in 2024, Annapolis Police have responded to 15 shooting events, including one homicide. Last year at this time, they had responded to 18 shootings with seven non-fatal gunshot victims and two murders. By the end of 2023, Annapolis reported nine homicides , an increase compared to the one faced in 2022.

Friday’s shooting was the third incident in Annapolis this year in which someone was struck by a bullet, according to publicly available gun data from city police.

One shooting, which took place on the 1100 block of Frederick Douglas Street the morning of April 20, resulted in a 52-year-old man receiving non-life-threatening injuries.

The other contact shooting was Annapolis’ first and only homicide so far in 2024.

David Winchester , 47, was found dead on March 28 in a wooded area off of Spa Road. Winchester was kidnapped in Baltimore earlier that day, according to charging documents. His mother made the report to Baltimore Police around 12:45 a.m. after two masked men armed with guns broke into her home and, demanding money, claimed Winchester was in their trunk.

Following a collaborative investigation with Baltimore Police and the U.S. Department of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and Explosives, Annapolis Police arrested Jamar Fincher, Marquis Mayo and Monae Fincher. According to charging documents, law enforcement officers were able to track a blue Mitsubishi Eclipse registered to Monae Fincher into the parking lot of Bates Middle School. Soon after arriving, “two quick flashes of light” were captured on surveillance footage, police said. Officials believe they were gunshots.

All three criminal cases have been forwarded to Anne Arundel County Circuit Court, according to the Maryland Judiciary.
