Columbia, SC - (WACH) — Columbia Police announced Saturday they have arrested two teenage girls in the death of a missing 13-year-old girl found in an unoccupied home after a house fire. Police Chief Skip Holbrook revealing in a news conference Saturday evening they have arrested a 16-year-old girl and a 15-year-old girl in the death of Ka'Niyah Baker. Both teens are being charged with murder. Fifth Circuit Solicitor Byron Gipson said he is also petitioning the family court to charge the girls as adults. Chief Holbrook described the crime as "heinous" and "brutal," which was repeated by other local officials during the news conference. On Wednesday night, Baker's body was found by firefighters inside 114 Cardamon Court, an unoccupied unit in the Capital Heights neighborhood off Farrow Road in Columbia. The Richland County Coroner says Baker was bludgeoned, stabbed and burned to death, describing the death as a "horrible homicide." The coroner said Baker had to be identified using scientific methods since a "visual identification" was not possible. Chief Holbrook said the 16-year-old suspect was wanted by the Department of Juvenile Justice after cutting off her ankle monitor. She was also a frequent runaway and listed as a high school dropout. The 15-year-old suspect was considered a frequent runaway and a high school dropout as well, according to Holbrook. Baker was reported missing by the Richland County Sheriff's Department January 16. Authorities say she was last seen January 13 on Auburnleaf Drive in Hopkins. Baker had also been reported missing out of Sumter back in July. Chief Holbrook said Baker was originally from Sumter and was also considered a frequent runaway. This story is developing, stay with WACH FOX for the latest updates.
