ORLANDO — Roster retention is the primary goal for
UCF football coach
Scott Frost until the
transfer portal window closes on Saturday. But that doesn't mean the
Knights aren't seeking to add a few pieces over the coming weeks. In fact, they already have. Former Tennessee State tackle Connor Meadows and former Michigan edge rusher Aymeric Koumba officially signed with UCF on Sunday, and former
James Madison kicker Noe Ruelas committed just before Easter came to an end, according to 247Sports. While the Knights likely will not undergo the sort of upheaval that happened in the immediate aftermath of
Gus Malzahn's resignation , changes are inevitable in the college football offseason. Let's look at a few targets already offered, and a couple more that might make some sense given the roster's needs. Here are five potential portal additions that could improve UCF ahead of the 2025 season.
EJ Colson, QB, Purdue
Following
Dylan Rizk's departure , UCF is in need of a quarterback to round out its room. The Knights finished the spring with only two healthy scholarship passers —
Tayven Jackson and Jacurri Brown — as Cam Fancher sustained an injury to his left hand during the April 11 open practice. So, what about a potential return to Orlando for Colson, who last October became the youngest starting quarterback in school history?
Colson followed former UCF offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Darin Hinshaw to Purdue in the winter, but re-entered the portal Thursday as the Boilermakers brought back Ryan Browne from North Carolina. He is still just 18 years old, opting to reclassify from the 2025 graduating cycle, and he has four years of eligibility remaining. The 6-foot-1, 215-pound dual-threat was a prolific high school player at Ellenwood (Ga.) Cedar Grove, totaling 5,969 passing yards, 1,354 rushing yards and 84 touchdowns over three seasons and guiding the team to consecutive appearances in Georgia's 3A championship game. UCF should seek upside if possible, though it's far from a certainty that any young signal-caller will be content with sitting on the sidelines — even if it's part of a long-term plan. Jeremy Hecklinski (Wake Forest) and Maealiuaki Smith (Oklahoma State) are also among the notable, available QB options.
Jordan Davis, South Alabama
Expected to be in the mix at left tackle, Justin Royes will instead miss the season after suffering an injury during spring camp. UCF experimented with several
offensive line combinations, most often utilizing Paul Rubelt and Preston Cushman at the tackle spots. UCF explored the possibility of adding
Appalachian State 's Markell Samuel, but he instead signed with Oklahoma State while on his first scheduled official visit. Meadows — a 13-game starter at right tackle for Ohio Valley Conference champion Tennessee State — is already signed, but the Knights could add competition on the left side with Davis. Davis started every game last fall for South Alabama, including five performances with PFF grades of 80 or higher in pass protection. The 6-foot-5, 306-pound Georgia native has one year of eligibility left. Bryce Koon, of 247Sports, listed UCF among a group of teams that has reached out to Davis since he entered the portal Monday. Kansas, North Carolina, Oklahoma State, Rutgers, West Virginia and Wisconsin have reported interest as well. North Carolina, which visits UCF on Sept. 20, recently added South Alabama's starting quarterback Gio Lopez to its squad.
Tony Johnson, WR, Cincinnati
An Ocala native, whom several members of UCF's recruiting staff will know from his three years at
Florida Atlantic , Johnson had his best game as a Bearcat in the Bounce House last October. He's due to visit UCF and Miami in the coming days, according to 247Sports. Johnson hauled in six receptions for a season-high 76 yards and a touchdown as Cincinnati evened the all-time series at five wins apiece. He started eight of the Bearcats' 12 games, catching 48 passes for 449 yards. In 2023, Johnson was nominated for the Burlsworth Award, given to the most outstanding player in the Football Bowl Subdivision that began his career as a walk-on. He had 60 receptions for 669 yards and seven touchdowns in 25 career games at FAU.
UCF's largely unproven receiving corps suffered several injury blows during camp. Florida transfer Marcus Burke missed the last three weeks, and West Virginia transfer DayDay Farmer suffered a season-ending, non-contact knee injury.
Jeffson Lafontant, DT, Bethune-Cookman
Two of UCF's top three defensive tackles on the projected depth chart missed all of 2024 due to injury, redshirt sophomore John Walker and Georgia Tech transfer Horace Lockett Jr. The unit already needs to replace more than 1,500 snaps logged by NFL hopeful Ricky Barber and outgoing transfers Lee Hunter and Matthew Alexander. Lafontant only played four games in 2024 for Bethune-Cookman, but made a noticeable impact in his 158 snaps. The 6-foot-3, 290-pound North Miami Beach native had 18 total tackles, including nine solo stops, with three TFLs and two sacks — near-identical stats to his true freshman campaign, in which he played 10 times. Lafontant claimed an offer from UCF on Saturday. He's also picked up offers from James Madison, Kennesaw State, Miami (Ohio), Sacramento State and Southern Mississippi. The Knights are also reportedly in on Charleston Southern's Dylan Manuel along the defensive interior, an FCS second-team Freshman All-American according to Phil Steele.
Josh Schell, EDGE, Grand Valley State
Edge rusher, on paper, is one of the Knights' deepest position groups — even before the addition of Koumba from Michigan over the weekend. Still, there no such thing as too many, and UCF is among a handful of teams to offer 6-foot-4, 265-pound junior Schell. Schell, from Mount Pleasant, Michigan, earned an All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honorable mention by collecting 35 tackles, three TFLs, two sacks, six pass breakups and three QB hurries. To date, UCF is the lone Power Four program to pursue Schell. He's a coveted player among Group of Five teams, including Arkansas State, Bowling Green, Buffalo, Charlotte, Coastal Carolina, Florida Atlantic, Georgia State, James Madison, Miami (Ohio), Middle Tennessee, New Mexico and New Mexico State.
