GAINESVILLE — Florida’s power-packed lineup provided no punch when it mattered most to set up a do-or-die Sunday with Georgia, the Gators’ longtime nemesis during the NCAA softball Super Regionals. UF, the No. 3 seed, fell 2-1 to the unseeded Bulldogs during Game 2 of the best-of-three series for a trip to the Women’s College World Series. Florida is 6-0 in Game 3s, but will have to find the offensive success that has carried the Gators (47-15) all season. The Gators entered Saturday third nationally with 436 RBI, but finished 1 for 15 with runners in scoring position and left 13 on base, including four each by Taylor Shumaker, Ava Brown and Kenleigh Cahalan. Florida struck out eight times, seven of them swinging, as the postseason pressure intensified against the Bulldogs (35-22) — now 5-1 against the Gators in the Super Regionals. “We had a chance to win,” coach Tim Walton said. “We just didn’t execute.” Cahalan popped out to second base on the first pitch she faced to end the game with two runners on base. Korbe Otis flew out to deep left center field on the previous at bat, the second shot to the warning track on a day the veteran left fielder had two of her team’s seven hits and drove in the only run. “We’re one swing away from winning that game,” Otis said. A day after Keagan Rothrock limited Georgia to two hits during a 6-1 win, the Bulldogs chased the Gators sophomore in the bottom of the second inning after she allowed her second solo home run on just 24 pitches. Shortstop Emily Digby’s shot to left field gave Georgia a 2-0 lead after designated hitter Lyndi Rae Davis tagged Rothrock in the Bulldogs’ second at-bat, sending a towering shot to right center field. The Gators left the bases loaded in the top of second inning when Brown struck out, beginning a frustrating day at the plate for Walton’s squad. “We were chasing balls out of the zone,” Walton said. “We had more swinging misses today, probably than we’ve had. That just tells you about the magnitude of the game. “It’s a little bit different when you get into woulda, coulda, shoulda College World Series, all those things.” After escaping a bases-loaded jam, Bulldogs pitcher Lilli Backes settled down. In the top of the third inning, she struck out three Gators swinging to give her 6 Ks. The Gators did, however, continue to threaten. But after Otis’ deep fly ball to the warning track in center field with the bases loaded cut the lead to 2-1, Cahalan grounded out to end the inning runners on second and third. Florida’s final chance began when hard-hitting first baseman Regan Walsh drilled Backes in the right shoulder with a line drive to open the seventh inning. Momentarily stunned and smarting, the Georgia senior left scooped up the ball and made an errant throw to first base to allow Walsh to reach second. Mia Williams then drew a walk to give the Gators two runners with no out, but Brown struck out again. After her final K of the day, Backes exited having allowed seven hits and striking out eight on 127 pitches to give way to Randi Roelling for the final two outs. After Rothrock’s early struggles, the combination of Olivia Miller , a sophomore from Orlando, and senior Kara Hammock held Georgia to just two hits. Rothrock (15-6) is likely to get the start Sunday rested and ready to help the Gators advance to their 13th WCWS under Walton . Otis expects Florida’s hitters to do their part this time. “Tomorrow’s a new day coming out, she said. “We’ll be very prepared and very confident going in.”
