At 3:30 PM, I dug into the University of Illinois System Board of Trustee's meeting on May 22nd, and found out they officially approved Illini head coaches Brad Underwood and Bret Bielema's new contracts. Here the new details coming to light. Bielema's six-year deal can become a 10-year deal if he win six-or-games four times. And the Iowa alum is prohibited from taking another Big Ten job. He can take a job with another conference, but there would be a big buyout. He'll also get a bonus in July for each year he stays. It starts at $700,000 and increases to $1.2 million in 2030. Underwood's six-year deal becomes a 10-year deal if he makes four NCAA Tournaments. He's prevented from taking any other college basketball job unless "material changes occur". He gets a $1.1 million bonus each July if he still the head coach. And that bonus increases with Sweet 16 appearances and Big Ten titles. Underwood will make $4.4 annually, while Bielema will make $8 annually starting in 2029. It starts at $7.7 million. I have FOIA requested for the full contracts, but have to wait until the University sends them to me.
