The University of Maine baseball team’s trip to Baltimore has been a forgettable one after the first two days.

The University of Maryland Baltimore County racked up 15 hits on Friday afternoon and thumped the Black Bears 15-1 after winning Thursday’s three-game series opener 7-1.

The teams will conclude the series at 7 p.m. on Saturday.

UMBC improved to 20-19 overall and 10-7 in America East play while UMaine fell to 10-31 and 6-10, respectively.

On Friday, senior second baseman Anthony Swenda, senior shortstop Dawson Baracani and graduate student center fielder Justin Taylor went a combined 10-for-12 with a homer, triple and double, eight runs batted in and seven runs scored.

Swenda went 4-for-4 including his third homer of the season and a double. He drove in two runs and scored twice.

Baracani had a triple and two singles and knocked in four and scored four. Taylor had three singles and had two RBIs and one run scored.

Junior lefty Jayden Shertel tossed seven innings of four-hit, one-run ball to up his record to 2-4. He struck out six and walked one.

Logan Burrill’s fourth homer of the season accounted for UMaine’s only run. Colin Plante had two singles and Dean O’Neill had a double.

Sophomore righthander Luc Lavigueur absorbed the loss and is now 2-3.

He gave up 10 hits and nine earned runs in four innings with four walks, two hit batters and five strikeouts.

The Retrievers erupted for six second-inning runs and added two more in the third and never looked back.

Baracani’s bases-loaded triple with two outs was the big blow of the inning and Taylor capped the rally with an RBI single. Baracani and Taylor had RBI singles in the third.

On Thursday, senior righthanders Luke Johnson and Sam Daniels scattered eight hits and the University of Maryland Baltimore County scored four runs in the fourth inning en route to the 7-1 victory.

Johnson allowed the eight hits and one run over 6 ⅔ innings with two strikeouts and three walks. He improved to 3-4.

Daniels pitched the final 2 ⅓ innings and didn’t allow a hit. He struck out two and didn’t walk anyone.

The Retrievers took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on Luke Trythall’s sacrifice fly.

They broke it open in the fourth.

Danny Wyatt reached on a fielder’s choice and Derek Paris doubled him home.

Kyle Eddington singled and Baracani then singled home Paris.

UMaine starter and losing pitcher Jason Krieger uncorked a wild pitch to deliver the third run of the inning.

Following a walk, Krieger was replaced by Marshall Smaracko and the final run of the inning crossed the plate on a passed ball.

Baracani paced the UMBC attack with three singles and two runs-batted in.

Eddington had two base hits.

Matthew Best tripled for the winners and Paris and Matt Ryan each doubled.

Connor Goodman singled twice for the Black Bears. Jake Marquez tripled, Plante doubled and Jeremiah Jenkins drove in the only run with a single in the seventh.

Freshman Krieger took the loss and is now 1-4. He allowed six hits and five runs, four earned, over his 3 ⅔ innings. He struck out two and walked four.

Smaracko got the final out of the fourth before Owen Wheeler and Blaine Cockburn each tossed two innings in relief. Wheeler allowed two runs and a hit with two strikeouts and two walks and Cockburn allowed two hits and no runs with three strikeouts and two walks.
