PRINCESS ANNE Md. – The University of Maryland Eastern Shore held their 138th annual spring commencement. Graduates from across the country got the opportunity to walk across the stage and go from UMES college student to UMES Alumni. Governor Wes Moore spoke as the keynote speaker and gave graduates bolts of inspiration. “For each one of you, regardless of your journey, regardless of your path, regardless of what avenue you had to get here. Today is your day.” William P Hytche Athletic Center hosted the event, and close to 300 graduates began their new journey. UMES Vice President, Dr. Robert Mock, said this is one of the most important days for the university. “It was an impactful day having Governor Wes Moore on our campus is amazing. The first African American Governor of this state, and to give a commencement address at a Historically Black College University in the state of Maryland, is groundbreaking.” Aniya Broussard said it’s a life-changing experience. “I’m surprised I didn’t cry because it’s a little overwhelming. I probably will cry after this, but it was mostly excitement for me and my peers. It was cool. Dr. Mock declares graduation one of the most symbolic moments in a person’s life – “Graduation represents commencement, which means the next step. Life is about to launch something new, bigger, and beyond what they prepared for here on our campus.”
