Updates from the "No Kings" protest in Richmond on Saturday organized by the 50501 movement. After the majority of protesters called it a night, a group of about 50-100 continued marching the streets of Richmond. The group, dressed in mostly black clothes and wearing masks, briefly blocked eastbound E. Broad Street between City Hall and the General Assembly Building. The demonstrators made their way back to Kanawha Plaza, where speeches focused on abolishing ICE.

Hundreds attend pair of Roanoke protests
Roanoke joined the nationwide "No Kings" movement with two separate rallies Saturday protesting President Donald Trump's policies.
A crowd gathered under the shade at Elmwood Park to listen to speakers at the "No Kings" protest on Saturday. Roanoke Indivisible rallied in the morning at McCadden Park in northwest Roanoke, and a second protest organized by Roanoke resident Steve Davidson was held at Elmwood Park downtown in the afternoon. Speakers at both events urged attendees to take a stand against what they saw as overreach by Trump and his administration. "Just by being here you are already part of this action of building a mass movement," said Marie Collins with Indivisible who spoke to a crowd of around 400 at McCadden Park.

6:30 p.m. Thousands of protesters are marching along Richmond's street. The rally started at 5 p.m. near the bell tower in the southeast corner of Capitol Square, and the group is now headed for Kanawha Plaza. Capitol Police have been monitoring the protest and issuing traffic alerts as the demonstrators have made there way along E. Broad Street, 14th Street and 9th Street. Police are warning drivers to avoid the area, or expect traffic delays. Police on scene estimated the crowd size at 5,000.

5:55 p.m. Joseph Checklick Jr., a 21-year-old resident of Culpeper, intentionally accelerated into a crowd of protesters holding a "No Kings Day" rally near James Madison Highway Saturday afternoon, according to a statement from the Culpeper Police Department. Police said no injuries were reported and they don't know who was hit.

As Richmond's "No Kings" protest gets underway, similar demonstrations around the state starting to wrap up. In Lynchburg, organizers estimate
about 500 people showed up to an event at Monument Terrace in the city's downtown.
Hundreds gather at Downtown Lynchburg's Monument Terrace for the "No Kings" rally. With about a dozen Lynchburg Police Department officers on hand, the event stayed peaceful, even as supporters of President Donald Trump entered the crowd to show their support for the president.
Protesters begin to gather in Capitol Square
By 4:40 p.m. Saturday, a large crowd began to assemble on the grounds of Capitol Square in Richmond. A "No Kings" protest, organized by an anti-Trump group, is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. A handful of Virginia Capitol Police are stationed around the perimeter of Capitol Square.

50501 Virginia, the local chapter of the self-named 50501 Movement, is holding a rally and peaceful march in Richmond on Saturday. The anti-Trump group is calling it "No Kings Day," and the event is one of many planned in cities across the county. Besides Richmond, the group has Virginia protests planned in Virginia Beach, Chesapeake,
Norfolk , Yorktown, Williamsburg, Mathews County, Petersburg,
Lynchburg , Charlottesville, Fredericksburg and Roanoke. In Richmond, there's a 70%
chance of thunderstorms starting around 5 p.m. The organization says the “No Kings” theme is meant to support democracy and is against what they call the authoritarian actions of the Trump administration. The name 50501 stands for 50 states, 50 protests, one movement. They've been organizing protests throughout Trump's term in office. Thousands of people turned out for
similar peaceful protests in April in Capitol Square.
Today's protests are happening as the U.S. Army is marking its 250th anniversary with events in Washington, D.C., including a military parade, which will see tanks rolling through the streets of the nation's capital. Saturday is also President Trump's birthday. Organizers of Richmond's event have scheduled a rally at 5 p.m. at the bell tower in Capitol Square, followed by "a peaceful march" to Kanawha Plaza, which is three blocks away. 50501 Virginia said speakers at the rally will include state Sen. Ghazala Hashmi, a candidate in the Democratic primary for lieutenant governor; Mary Bauer, ACLU of Virginia executive director; Wes Gobar, good governance director at Clean Virginia; David Hoover, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church; Sereen Hadid, leader of VCU Students for Justice in Palestine; and a 50501 Virginia representative. The group also said partnering groups will include ACLU of Virginia, Clean Virginia, RVA Indivisible, Richmond City Democratic Committee, Metro Richmond Area Young Democrats, Henrico Democrats, Hanover Democrats and Chesterfield Democrats. On Friday, Gov. Glenn Youngkin said he had
mobilized the Virginia National Guard across the state for the weekend protests. “And so, you will see Guard presence, you will see state police presence, you will see our tactical team presence, you will see local police presence all over the state,” Youngkin told reporters Friday.
