The city has moved from third to first on the list of safest cities in America.

Virginia Beach has claimed the No. 1 spot as the safest metro city in the U.S., according to SafeWise, a company that specializes in home security reviews.

Last year, the city was ranked as the third-safest city in America. And this year's move to the top is well-deserved. In 2017, there were fewer than two violent crimes per 1,000 residents in Virginia Beach, SafeWise reported.

Honolulu, Hawaii (ranked at No. 2), San Diego, California (ranked at No. 6), and Austin, Texas (ranked at No. 8), among others, also landed on the list of safest cities in the U.S.

For a city to be considered, its population had to be more than 300,000, which prevented other Hampton Roads cities from consideration. And to determine where each city was ranked, SafeWise used the most recent FBI crime statistics from 2016 and reviewed the number of violent crimes reported. These crimes include aggravated assault, rape, and murder.

SafeWise also reviewed the most dangerous cities in the U.S. Detroit, Michigan, fell at No. 1, followed by St. Louis, Missouri, and Memphis, Tennessee, to round out the top three.
