Several local restaurants are giving back to Virginia Beach's first responders by providing food during their 12+ hour shifts.

In the fight against coronavirus, the first responders—and the restaurant owners and workers who feed them—are all heroes in their own right.

With over 450,000 residents, Virginia Beach is the largest city in the Commonwealth. The Emergency Medical System (EMS) has over 600 certified volunteers, as well as 70 professional paramedics and supervisors, making up the largest volunteer EMS in the United States. These first responders risk their lives responding to 46,000 calls per year, and their safety is especially at risk during the COVID-19 pandemic.

But multiple restaurants in the city have been regularly delivering meals to the first responders.

"Shout out to our amazing VBEMS members for helping to keep our City safe! Thank you to {restaurants} and to the Virginia Beach Rescue Squad Foundation for working with us to provide low-contact lunches and dinners to our VBEMS duty crews Virginia Beach EMS

The restaurants who regularly deliver meals to Virginia Beach's EMS crews on shift include Firehouse Subs, Famous Uncle Al's Hot Dogs & Grill, Mission BBQ, Brothers Pizza, and Zero's Subs.

"First and foremost, the Virginia Beach Restaurant Association is committed to helping our community through these hard times...We will heavily rely on take-out, delivery, and gift certificates, so please consider those options while making your meal decisions," the Virginia Beach Restaurant Association posted on its website.

While VBEMS works around the clock to ensure we're cared for and while the aforementioned restaurants are keeping them fed during their shifts, we as a community can do our part by supporting our local restaurants by ordering take-out and delivery to help keep them afloat during COVID-19.

We at OCN and the Virginia Beach community thank you, VBEMS, for your selfless efforts during these trying times. And thank you, local restaurants, for delivering meals to our first responders during their long shifts.
