Lionsbridge (7-0-3 overall, 5-0-3 division) narrowly maintained its Chesapeake Division lead, staying unbeaten with a goal in stoppage time for a 3-3 draw against Charlottesville Blues FC (1-3-3 division). Blues goalkeeper Ryan Gallagher made several brilliant saves.

Coming into the night at Christopher Newport’s TowneBank Stadium, Lionsbridge had 32 division goals to the Blues’ five. But after Sam Hall’s goal in the eighth minute, Charlottesville got a goal from Zsombor Pall in the 43rd and went ahead on Luke Madden’s header in the 62nd.

The Lions’ second home loss in as many years to Charlottesville (1-3-3 division) looked probable until Luc Achermann netted a free kick from just left of the 18-yard box in the 95th minute.

Lionsbridge’s Andrew Bennett nearly won the game but missed a low liner just right of the goalpost just before the final whistles.

Pitching thrives as Pilots end skid

Peninsula pitchers yielded only three hits and two walks Saturday night as the Pilots (8-3) ended a three-game Coastal Plain League losing streak with a 3-1 victory over the Wilmington Sharks (6-6) at War Memorial Stadium in Hampton.

Because of bad weather, the start was delayed for 42 minutes, and another delay took an hour and 15 minutes. The game didn’t end until after 11 p.m.

Starter Nate Varnier pitched the first three innings, striking out four and giving up one hit. Winner Caleb Lingenfelter threw the next four innings, striking out five and giving up a run and hit.

Olvis Genao struck out three in a scoreless inning despite giving up a hit, and Anthony Roszko got the save with two strikeouts in a scoreless ninth.

The Pilots had just three hits, too — all singles — but led almost throughout the game. They went ahead 2-0 in the first. Carlos Pena walked, Jaxson Wall singled him to third, Pena scored on a wild pitch and Grayson Fitzwater hit an RBI single.

In the third, Scotty Young walked, stole second, went to third on an error by the catcher and scored on a wild pitch for a 3-0 margin.
Wilmington’s Jacob Tobias singled and scored in the seventh, but the Pilots gave up little else.
